What Is an IP-SAN?

An IP-SAN is a storage area network that uses standard Ethernet/IP networking to connect servers to shared block storage. Many IP-SAN systems use iSCSI to deliver SAN-style storage without Fibre Channel complexity.

Simple Explanation

An IP-SAN lets multiple servers access centralized storage across an IP network. Instead of every server depending only on its own internal drives, storage can be consolidated into a dedicated storage system and presented to servers as block-level storage.

Why Businesses Use IP-SAN

  • Shared storage for virtualization hosts
  • Centralized storage for business applications
  • Backup repositories and recovery targets
  • Lower-cost SAN architecture using Ethernet
  • Flexible expansion as capacity requirements grow

Design Still Matters

The network, switches, drives, RAID level, controller, workload, and backup strategy all affect the final result. Buying a box is not the same as designing a storage system.
